A relatively small vineyard surrounded by woodland. A vineyard that one doesn’t see from the road and that one does not imagine to find in this area. Pastorello di Langhirano, on the hilly left-bank of the Parma river, at roughly 500 meters above sea level, is the location of CROCIZIA, the company owned and manged by the Rizzardi family which has been producing wine here for over 15 years.
5 Hectares of vineyards, laced with fruit trees and bushes other wild plants, an authentic expression of nature and its surroundings. The soil is rich in limestone and in the old ages one could have found a limestone mine in the area. The strong shifts in temperature between the night and day-time, together with the specific soil and other geographical elements give the Crocizia wines their special character, rich in acidity to last well over time.
Crocizia has obtained a formal organic certification for its way of working back in 2003.
COMPOSITION OF THE SOIL
Malvasia Aromatica di Candia, Sauvignon, Barbera, Croatina, Pinot Nero
METHOD AND FILOSOFY APPLIED IN THE VINEYARD
The vineyards are managed in a complete organic manner. The grass and spontaneous vegetation in between the vines is cut twice a year by hand (sickle). Only in situations where absolutely necessary the younger plants are assisted in their growth by providing them (limited) fertilization with manure and vegetal compost.
METHOD AND FILOSOFY APPLIED DURING THE WINE MAKING PROCESS
The grapes are harvested by hand and managed in small batches. Depending on the wine the grapes are exposed to a limited natural maceration in steel basins. For the fermentation no yeast strains are added and the temperature is not managed / controlled. The wine is never fined or filtered. The wines are subject to natural and spontaneous re-fermentation in the bottle.
