A beautifull ruby-red Barbera which was left to mature for 18 months in steel vats, resulting in a wine with a with an amazing perfume of cherry's and red fruit. At first simple on the pallet but immediately intriguing. Fresh but with the plesant touch of accidity as one expects from a Barbera. And in this case we're talking earthy and juicy Barbera. Chapeau as the French say!
In Piedmont, in the small town of Maretto a few kilometers from Asti, in the hills of Monferrato, one finds the CROTIN 1897 wine-farm.
Their main activity is the production of DOC and DOCG wines from the grapes of their own vineyards. These vineyards are cultivated according to the Organic Farming standards, which means that the only treatments that are allowed are the treatments based on copper and Sulphur. Furthermore no herbicides or chemical fertilizers are used. The fertility of the soil is guaranteed by the use of green manure and the manure of their own sheep.
The hills on which our grapevines are situated are mostly made up of clay and marine sand. Many fossils can still be found in the soil which dates back to the Superior Villafranchain Pliocene. This particular composition of the soil allows for very original and unique wines.
